Have you ever heard a beautiful voice calling people to pray?
That is the Adhan, the call to prayer! It reminds all Muslims that it’s time to talk to Allah.
📖 Allah says in the Qur’an:
“When the call to prayer is made, hasten to the remembrance of Allah.” (Surah Al-Jumu’ah 62:9)
The Adhan is not just a sound—it is an invitation from Allah to leave everything and come to Him!
Who Calls the Adhan?
The person who gives the Adhan is called a Mu’adhin. The first Mu’adhin in Islam was Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him). He had a beautiful voice, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) chose him to call the Adhan.
The Mu’adhin climbs to a high place (or today, uses a microphone in a mosque) so everyone can hear the call to prayer.
What Are the Words of the Adhan?
The Adhan is in Arabic, and it has beautiful words that invite us to pray. Here’s what it means:
📢 Allahu Akbar (4 times) – Allah is the Greatest!
📢 Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah (2 times) – I bear witness that there is no god but Allah.
📢 Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah (2 times) – I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
📢 Hayya ‘alas-Salah (2 times) – Come to prayer!
📢 Hayya ‘alal-Falah (2 times) – Come to success!
📢 Allahu Akbar (2 times) – Allah is the Greatest!
📢 La ilaha illa Allah (1 time) – There is no god but Allah.
✨ For Fajr prayer, we add:
📢 As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm (2 times) – Prayer is better than sleep!
What Should We Do When We Hear the Adhan?
✅ Stop what we are doing and listen carefully.
✅ Repeat after the Mu’adhin (except for “Hayya ‘alas-Salah” and “Hayya ‘alal-Falah” – instead, say: “La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah”).
✅ Make a dua after the Adhan, asking Allah to bless Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
🕊 “Whoever repeats after the Mu’adhin and makes dua, all their sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih Muslim)
What Comes After the Adhan?
After the Adhan, the Iqamah is called. It’s a shorter version of the Adhan, telling us the prayer is about to start!
📢 The Iqamah includes:
- The same words as the Adhan
- Plus “Qad qamatis-Salah” (Prayer is about to begin)
Why is the Adhan Important?
✅ It reminds us about Salah.
✅ It calls people to success in this life and the next!
✅ It was started by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
📌 Did you know?
The Adhan is called in the ear of a newborn baby so that the first words they hear are about Allah!
